Memories of Hawthorn Dene

For George residents, the old Hawthorn Dene was a memory-maker. Known for its tall palm trees and proud peacocks, it hosted weddings, Sunday lunches, and infamous pub nights.

A Changing Industry

As the hospitality industry evolved, independent hotels struggled to compete with large brands, leading to Hawthorn Dene’s closure. The property eventually became derelict and a refuge for the homeless.

New Beginnings

In 2017, a Rustenburg businessman who relocated to George recognized the hotel’s potential. He purchased the property at auction, admiring its history, and sympathetically restored many original features while blending modern conveniences. This revitalization restored the hotel as a George landmark.
