With a history spanning 30 years and thousands of participants, the Polar Bear Swim began in Ventersburg, moved to Bloemfontein, and has thrived in Sutherland over the past four years. Due to popular demand, the event expanded last year to include Victoria Bay and Santos Beach.
Participants enjoyed a safe, well-coordinated day with lifeguards, medics, medals, and lucky draws. While charity partnerships proved challenging, Helpende Hande stepped in to raise funds for a children’s development project.
This year’s swims are scheduled for 19 July at Victoria Bay at 12:00. The aim is to involve local businesses in a team-building challenge and build long-term community spirit and tourism potential.
The Polar Bear team handles all logistics and safety—local support is simply welcomed, especially in these early years of establishing the event in the region.
