The Lions Karoo to Coast has stood as a landmark event on South Africa’s mountain biking calendar since 1999. Renowned for its scenic yet challenging route along Prince Alfred’s Pass—the country’s longest gravel mountain pass—the race connects the quaint Klein Karoo town of Uniondale with the coastal gem of Knysna. Over the course of 25 editions, thousands of riders have embraced this unforgettable journey through diverse terrain and rich heritage.
The 2025 edition promises exciting enhancements that elevate the experience for participants and spectators alike. In recent years, the inclusion of e-Mountain bikes and gravel bikes has broadened the event’s appeal. Now, the event is expanding further with the introduction of a second day of registration and the launch of the Wheels and Wine Expo, both set to take place at the Uniondale Showgrounds from Friday, 19 September.
Uniondale, often bypassed on the well-trodden Garden Route, will take center stage during the event weekend. The Wheels and Wine Expo aims to showcase the town’s charm, support local producers, and provide a platform for cycling brands to engage directly with their core market. Uniondale Lions President Xander Britz emphasized the broader impact: “The Karoo to Coast is a major tourism driver for Uniondale. With every bed in town booked out on the Saturday before the race, we’re hoping to extend that impact to Friday as well. This benefits our local economy while giving riders a richer, more immersive experience.”
Entries for the 2025 Lions Karoo to Coast are now open. The R800 entry fee includes a hearty dinner on Saturday evening at the Uniondale Showgrounds, offering riders a chance to connect and refuel ahead of race day.
