In October, the Fundza Mzantsi Reading Championship celebrates its 14th anniversary. The event will be held at Eden Place in George. This annual celebration is a collaboration between the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), the National Library of South Africa (NLSA), and the George Municipality. The championship actively promotes literacy and encourages a love for reading.
The National Library of South Africa (NLSA) serves as the guardian of the country’s collective national heritage materials and the official depository for all published output.
The National Library of South Africa Act 92 of 1998 mandates the NLSA to collect, preserve, and make these documents accessible to ensure the preservation of knowledge for future generations.
The National Library of South Africa, in its current form, emerged on November 1, 1999, following the amalgamation of two former national libraries: the South African Library in Cape Town and the State Library in Pretoria.
The NLSA operates through two primary programmes: Business Development and Public Engagement. These programmes are integral to the library’s mission to promote literacy and education across the nation.
Previous editions of the Fundza Mzantsi Reading Championship have been both exciting and educational, attracting readers and spectators alike. This year, 299 inmates from all nine provinces will participate, competing against book club members from universities, public schools, and the community.Evaluators will assess participants in four categories: impromptu reading, debating, spelling bee, and book reviewing. The event stands out for the diverse backgrounds of the competing book clubs.
The initiative aims to enhance the culture of reading and combat illiteracy in South Africa. It provides inmates with the opportunity for a second chance, helping them make better life choices and become more informed citizens. Reading allows individuals to gain knowledge, explore different cultures, discover scientific advancements, and understand the wisdom of the ages. The NLSA’s involvement ensures proper coordination and harmonization with other programs sharing similar goals.
The Fundza Mzantsi Reading Championship is free to attend and will be held at the Conville Civic Centre in George. For more information, contact Logan Maistry at 083 644 4050.
